Congratulations, grads! You’ve officially survived the group projects, 8 a.m. lectures, and 37 different versions of Canva resumes. Welcome to the real world—where half the job descriptions want five years of experience and the other half are written by bots.
And speaking of bots… let’s talk about AI.
Unless you’ve been living under a rock (or majoring in geology), you’ve seen artificial intelligence seep into every nook of modern life. From ChatGPT writing cover letters to TikTok using machine learning to feed you perfectly curated chaos, AI is shaping how we consume, create, and connect. For marketers, it’s a goldmine—and a bit of a minefield.
But here’s the thing: AI isn’t here to replace you. In fact, despite all of the advantages to AI, I’m here to reassure you that humans remain (and I think always will, fingers crossed), irreplaceable.
Skill Up, Don’t Freak Out
Let’s just clear the air—yes, AI will automate tasks. But tasks are not the same as talents.
According to a 2023 McKinsey report, marketing departments that fully integrate AI can automate up to 45% of their repetitive workflows—things like A/B testing, keyword research, and performance reporting. That sounds scary until you realize: it frees you up to focus on the high-impact, creative, human stuff.
What you need now is a stack—not just of tools, but of skills:
- Data literacy: You don’t need to be a data scientist, but you should know your way around dashboards. Google Analytics 4, HubSpot, and even TikTok’s Creator Center are treasure maps if you know how to read them.
- Prompt engineering: Writing for machines is becoming a must. Learning how to talk to AI (think ChatGPT, Claude, or Jasper) will be the new “Excel fluency” on your resume.
- Strategic thinking: AI is great at execution. It’s not so great at context. That’s your edge—knowing why something matters, not just what to do.
The Tools of the Trade (That Won’t Make You Obsolete)
Here are a few platforms you can cozy up to now that’ll make you look like a marketing wizard in your first job (or startup—go off, entrepreneur):
- ChatGPT / Claude: For generating drafts, social captions, scripts, and more. Just don’t copy-paste. Use them like a junior creative intern—helpful, fast, occasionally weird.
- Canva + Magic Write / Adobe Firefly: Visual storytelling meets AI-powered design. Great for folks who think they “can’t design.” Spoiler: now you can.
- Notion AI / Copy.ai: For automating content plans, creating briefs, and summarizing meetings (because yes, you’ll have lots of meetings).
- Descript: Turn video and audio into polished content without needing to know Final Cut or Premiere. Basically a godsend for content marketing.
Learning these tools won’t just impress your future boss—it’ll make you faster, smarter, and frankly, harder to replace.
Said another way, in a world where everyone has access to the same algorithms, your greatest advantage is the one thing AI can’t replicate—you.
Now, get out there and make the world a better – more human – place.
